The Volunteer’s Role
Cuso International, in partnership with Engineers Without Borders Canada, is seeking a candidate interested in being part of the Volunteering Cooperation Program. As a Heavy Moving Equipment (HME) Advisor, you will provide technical and advisory support to the Integrated Mining Technical Training (IMTT) Unit at VETA Moshi to strengthen the delivery of practical training in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy moving equipment.
Working in collaboration with VETA Moshi under the SHARE Project, the HME Advisor will support instructors to strengthen their technical and practical competencies in heavy moving equipment systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and basic electrical systems. The volunteer will contribute to developing practical training stations and training models that can be used to demonstrate and teach the diagnosis of engine and equipment faults.
The Advisor will also provide technical guidance and hands-on capacity building related to key HME components and systems, including engines, differentials, gearboxes, braking systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems. Through coaching, practical demonstrations, knowledge transfer, and support to instructors, the volunteer will help VETA Moshi strengthen the quality and industry relevance of its HME training and better equip trainees with skills that respond to the needs of the mining and heavy-equipment industries in Tanzania.

As a volunteer, your duties will include:
- Conduct training needs assessment for Heavy Moving Equipment (HME) maintenance, focusing on identified skills gaps in hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems and equipment diagnostics. Develop and/or review practical HME training modules covering hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Develop basic electrical and electronic systems training for HME technicians, including fault-finding and diagnostic procedures. Establish practical training stations for engine systems using available HME engines and light-vehicle engine components.
- Develop practical training stations/modules for gearboxes and transmission systems. Develop practical training for differential and final-drive systems.
- Develop a practical training module and training station for HME braking systems.
- Develop HME engine diagnostic training using appropriate diagnostic tools and equipment.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Heavy Equipment Engineering, Mechatronics or related field.
Essential Background:
- Minimum 5 years of practical industry experience in maintenance, servicing, repair and diagnostics of heavy mobile equipment.
- Strong practical knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, transmissions/gearboxes, differentials/final drives and braking systems.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and electronic systems, including systematic fault diagnosis and troubleshooting.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment, service tools, technical manuals, schematics and manufacturer specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose engine, hydraulic, transmission and electrical faults.
- Experience in preventive maintenance, equipment inspection and maintenance planning.
- Ability to establish and/or improve practical HME training stations/workshops.
- Ability to transfer industry skills to instructors and trainees through coaching, demonstrations and hands-on practical training.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices applicable to HME workshops and maintenance operations.
