The Volunteer’s Role
Cuso International, in partnership with Engineers Without Borders Canada, is seeking a candidate interested in being part of the Volunteering Cooperation Program. As a Fitting and Machining Advisor, you will provide technical and advisory support to the Integrated Mining Technical Training (IMTT) Unit at VETA Moshi to strengthen the delivery of practical, industry-oriented training in fitting, machining, and related mechanical systems. Working in collaboration with VETA Moshi under the SHARE Project and Special Project Fund (SPF) activities, the Fitting and Machining Advisor will support instructors to strengthen their technical knowledge and practical competencies in fitting and machining operations, installation and maintenance of different types of pumps, dewatering systems, and mechanical systems used within industrial and mining environments.

As a volunteer, your duties will include:
- Conduct a practical skills-gap and training needs assessment for Fitting and Machining instructors, focusing on machining operations, fitting practices, pumps, dewatering systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, HDPE electrofusion welding and related maintenance skills. Strengthen instructors’ practical fitting and machining competencies, including measurement and marking-out, drilling, cutting, threading, grinding, turning, basic milling, assembly and use of appropriate hand and machine tools.
- Provide practical training on different types of pumps, including pump components, installation, alignment, operation, routine maintenance, fault identification, dismantling and reassembly. Strengthen practical knowledge and skills in mine and industrial dewatering systems, including pump selection, piping arrangements, installation, operation, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of dewatering equipment.
- Build instructors’ competencies in HDPE pipe installation and electrofusion welding, including pipe preparation, jointing procedures, use of electrofusion equipment, inspection of joints and safe working practices. Strengthen practical training in hydraulic systems, including hydraulic principles, pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, fittings, circuit interpretation, maintenance and basic fault diagnosis.
- Strengthen practical training in pneumatic systems, including compressors, valves, actuators, air preparation units, piping, circuit assembly, maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Strengthen instructors’ practical skills in basic industrial plumbing and pipe fitting, including pipe measurement, cutting, threading, joining, installation of valves and fittings, leak detection and basic maintenance.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical/Production Engineering, Fitting and Machining, Industrial Engineering, Technical Education, or a closely related engineering field.
Background:
- Minimum 5 years of practical industry experience in fitting and machining, mechanical maintenance, manufacturing, mining or related technical work.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of fitting and machining operations, including measuring, marking out, cutting, drilling, threading, grinding, turning, milling, assembly and use of hand and machine tools.
- Practical knowledge of different types of pumps, including installation, alignment, operation, dismantling, maintenance, reassembly and basic troubleshooting.
- Practical knowledge of dewatering systems, including pumps, piping arrangements, valves, fittings, installation, operation and maintenance
- Practical knowledge and experience in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including pumps, valves, cylinders, actuators, compressors, hoses, fittings, basic circuits and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge and practical experience in HDPE pipe installation and electrofusion welding, including pipe preparation, joining and inspection.
- Practical knowledge of basic pipe fitting and plumbing applicable to pumps, dewatering and industrial mechanical systems.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety, workshop safety, machine operation and safe mechanical maintenance practices.
