The Volunteer’s Role
Cuso International, in partnership with EWB Canada, is seeking a candidate interested in being part of the Volunteering Cooperation Program. As a Plater and Welding Advisor, you will provide technical and advisory support to the Integrated Mining Technical Training (IMTT) Unit at VETA Moshi to strengthen the delivery of practical training in plating, welding, metal fabrication, cutting, inspection, and related workshop practices.
Working in collaboration with VETA Moshi under the SHARE Project, the Plater and Welding Advisor will support instructors to strengthen their technical and practical competencies in heavy plate welding, welding procedures and specifications, metal fabrication, welding inspection, and non-destructive testing (NDT). The Advisor will contribute to strengthening practical training approaches that enable trainees to develop industry-relevant skills in the preparation, fabrication, joining, inspection, and repair of metal components and structures.
The Advisor will provide technical guidance and hands-on capacity building in key welding and cutting processes, including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), and Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC). Support will also include the interpretation and application of welding procedures, welding specifications, engineering/fabrication drawings, quality requirements, and appropriate welding inspection and testing procedures. Through coaching, practical demonstrations, development of fabrication exercises and projects, knowledge transfer, and ongoing support to instructors, the Advisor will help VETA Moshi strengthen the quality, safety, and industry relevance of its plating, welding, and fabrication training and better equip trainees with competencies that respond to the needs of the mining, manufacturing, construction, and metal fabrication industries in Tanzania.

As a volunteer, your duties will include:
- Conduct a training needs and skills-gap assessment for Plater and Welding instructors, focusing on current welding, cutting, fabrication and inspection practices. Review and strengthen practical training in heavy plate welding and fabrication, including plate preparation, fit-up, positioning, joint preparation and welding techniques.
- Develop and/or review practical training modules for SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW processes. Strengthen practical training in welding and cutting processes, including Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC) and other appropriate thermal cutting techniques.
- Build instructors capacity in the development, interpretation and application of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and related welding procedures Strengthen instructor and trainee competencies in welding inspection, weld quality control and identification of welding defects.
- Introduce/strengthen practical training in appropriate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods for weld inspection. Develop practical metal fabrication projects based on engineering drawings, measurements, marking out, cutting, forming, fitting and welding.
- Promote and strengthen safety and security practices in Plater and Welding training, including safe use of equipment, PPE, hazard identification, workshop safety, emergency procedures, and secure handling and storage of tools and materials.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, Manufacturing/Fabrication Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related technical field.
Essential Background:
- Minimum 5 years of practical industry experience in welding, plating, metal fabrication and related operations.
- Strong practical knowledge of heavy plate welding, fabrication, joint preparation, fit-up, welding positions and welding techniques
- Demonstrated practical competence in relevant welding processes, including SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and FCAW.
- Practical knowledge of thermal cutting processes, including Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC) and other appropriate cutting techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, welding symbols and technical specifications.
- Knowledge and practical application of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and appropriate welding procedures and standards.
- Knowledge of welding inspection, quality control, identification of welding defects and basic NDT methods.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and supervise practical fabrication projects from drawings through marking out, cutting, fitting, welding and finishing.
